Answers for IT

The questions and answers here are intended to provide a quick answer to some of the most common questions for technical users and IT staff. If you have any other questions or would be interested in more detailed information, please call us at (800) 801-1232.

Q. Will my institution's IT staff need to support StudentAccess?

No. Heiberg Consulting can provide all the technical support for the StudentAccess software program. Your IT staff may need to assist with downloading upgrades if you do not have permissions on your PC.

Q. What are the system requirements?

  • Windows XP or higher
  • Pentium III Processor
  • SVGA (800x600 or higher) video adapter
  • Microsoft Access 2003 or higher
  • Network required for multi-user functionality

Q. Can I use a Mac to run StudentAccess?

Yes, you can run StudentAccess on a Mac but it will need to be running an emulation program like Parallels or Fusion. Or, you can use the Boot Camp feature on your Intel based Mac to run Windows and Microsoft Office.

Q. Is a network server required?

A network server is not required but is usually used in most multi-user installations. This software can be installed on a single, stand alone computer. A workgroup configuration with a single PC sharing the data file is also common.

Q. Where is the data stored?

The data is stored in an Access data file, separate from the program file. If multiple people need access to the data, then the data file should be located on a network or other shared drive. Each user will need read/write access to the data file location. A SQL server can also be used to store the data instead of the Access data file.

Q. Is the data secure/ is encryption used?

Yes, StudentAccess uses secure 256-bit encryption.

Q. How much disk space is needed?

You should allow approximately 10 MB for the program file. For the data file, a good estimate is 1 MB per 100 students per year without pictures. Space requirements will vary if pictures are stored based on the size and resolution of the pictures.

Q. Is there a web version available?

Web versions are currently available to Student Support Services, Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, and GEAR UP StudentAccess users. If you would like to inquire about the availability of web versions for other programs please contact us at 1.800.801.1232 or email us at info@studentaccess.com

Q. Can I use StudentAccess with Remote Access and VPN?

Yes. With any type of remote access, our recommendations will be based on bandwidth. For low bandwidth remote access, we recommend Terminal Services. For higher bandwidth environments VPN connections work well. In all cases, Terminal Services, StudentAccess web versions, and SQL server databases increase performance.

Q. Does StudentAccess support Microsoft SQL Server?

Yes, StudentAccess is fully compatible with Microsoft SQL Server. For complete instructions on how to set up an ODBC connection, call us at 1.800.801.1232 for assistance.
